When retailer incentives help — and when they distract

Store managers juggle dozens of brand asks. A simple incentive for keeping a display intact through a four-week wave can protect your investment. A complicated points game that rewards only sell-in volume can push overstock into the backroom while the shopper-facing story disappears.

We prefer incentives tied to observable standards: correct placement, host attendance, and photo proof on agreed days. Those standards are fair to store teams and useful to brand managers reviewing a multi-banner campaign.

Share the scorecard early. Surprises breed resistance. When managers know the visit schedule and the criteria, coaching feels collaborative instead of punitive.

If your budget is thin, skip elaborate gifts and invest in a clear one-pager plus a thank-you note from the brand team. Respect still moves displays.
